Durham University have invited us to assist in a project they are working on within their grounds to create a new bat roost feature from an abandoned building. The first step is to survey the site and surrounding area to see which bats are currently using the location and potentially already roosting there.
The evening will involve a mix of static surveys and transect routes (depending on the number of people available) and is open to all members, but must be booked in advance so we are aware of numbers. The event is also being attended by a number of Durham University students so it would be great if some of our members could assist with supporting and mentoring those new students during the survey. However, if you’ve never done any surveying at all you are still welcome to attend and learn alongside the group.
Equipment required for the evening is
- Suitable Clothing and Footwear – it is likely to be extremely muddy
- Camp chair for comfort during static surveys
- Head torch – ideally with a red light as well as white
- Clipboard and pen if you are able
- Any surveying equipment you may have, e.g. detectors and night vision aids
We will meet in the carpark at Low Burnhall Woods at 8pm to get organised and set up. Survey effort is expected to finish by 11pm. Please can you forward on all copies of files you may have within a week of the event if you aren’t able to on the night.
Parking is limited so please arrange car sharing where possible.
